How To Announce Your Job Search
If you have been let go, quit, or somehow severed from your employer– let the world know!
There is nothing to be embarrassed about. Everyone has had to look for a new job. Remember what happened in 2021/Covid?
Let’s normalize what has been stigmatized.
Finding yourself without a job can be terrifying, exciting, humbling, empowering all at the same time. It’s an emotional roller coaster. Everyone goes through this- again, let me assure you that what you are feeling is normal and has been felt by everyone who has been let go.
When you have given yourself time to process the emotions and have a game plan set, then you can announce what you want to do next.
Why would you want to post about this on LinkedIn?
It’s the largest professional social network
Recruiters use it every day to source and contact potential candidates
Professionals use it to connect with like-minded professionals
Your past colleagues use it to stay connected
Why would you NOT want to post about this on LinkedIn?
You don’t want people to know
You don’t know what to say
You’re afraid of what people might think
I want you to go to LinkedIn right now and type in the search bar, “#OpenToWork” and what you will see are hundreds of people sharing information about their job search.
Here’s what you need to know before writing your announcement post.
First, Create a draft in your word processing software or on paper, don’t try and think about this and write it on LinkedIn.
Be specific
Show your value
Specify geographic and work preferences
Craft a clear Call to Action
Include contact information

Always stay positive and professional
Be specific about your goals
Highlight your unique value propositions
Provide clear contact information
Use a conversational yet professional tone
❌ DON’T:
Use generic, templated language
Come across as unfocused or “open to anything”
Neglect proofreading
Overshare personal challenges
Use unprofessional imagery

This serves as a reminder that the interview is your chance to evaluate the job and people. Don’t ignore some of the red flags mentioned. Listen to your gut and ask others for their opinion if you need a second opinion.

You need both strong and weak ties, but weaker ties are more likely to translate into a job. Think carefully about this and if you need more justification, read the research below.

I think this sentence summarizes the essence: “when it comes to finding a new job, moderately weak ties are the most useful and the strongest ties are the least. For instance, compared with extremely weak ties with one mutual friend, a new tie with 10 mutual friends nearly doubles the probability of changing jobs!”
